What is Spyware? The definition of Spyware has been evolving from a simple to a complicated one. But for those needs a simple definition of spyware, it is a computer program which monitors a personal computer’s activity, including but not limited to keystrokes, websites visited, and other online transactions. As the word suggests, the information and planting of such program is made without the consent and knowledge of the user.
There are several ways with which enables hackers or the culprits to infiltrate one’s computer. It may be done manually. This means that an individual has directly accessed and installed a spyware program in the personal computer without the owner or user knowledge thereof. It may also be done indirectly which means that surfing, downloading or simply being away from keyboard while online is susceptible of being penetrated and planted with such malicious program.
Some people have valid reasons for placing such programs but mostly do not and are not allowed by law to do so. An example of a valid reason for putting up a spyware is the exercise of parental control over the children’s surfing activities. Through spywares, a parent may be able to monitor what sites are being viewed by their children and to track down at what time they are doing the activity. But for those individual who are not authorized to do so merely shows their criminal designs to steal any useful information about the victim to be used for their own profit. Credit cards, bank accounts and trade secrets are one of the profitable information a hacker could use to the prejudice of the victim.
Spyware can potentially monitor virtually anything what the user does depending on their programming. Some simply records keystrokes but others can even see what the user is viewing at the moment. Knowing which website or program contains spyware and which one do not is a hard task to do because some are embedded to files which antivirus detects as a normal window file or executable. Moreover, spyware can come to a size of 56kb and has capability to regenerate or fill in the missing components in the windows registry. The emergence of spyware makes internet an unsafe place for every user. Every user is a potential victim of this program.
The worsening of spyware threat paved the way for creation of multiple programs specifically designed to counter it. Some anti-spyware tools are designed merely to detect the spyware on the personal computer but some others detects and removes the spyware. However, it must be noted that removing the spyware manually is dangerous because it may impair windows performance. For extreme cases, it is often recommended to just back up the files, reformat and reinstall the operating system.
It is worth noting that hackers have devised ways in order to dupe users to download their malevolent programs. Sometimes they disguise themselves as free stuff over the net, and even as a free anti-spyware program itself. It is best that when dealing with the internet, the user must take necessary precaution with his surfing activities and one way to do so is by having an antivirus, firewall, and a reliable anti-spyware software at hand. The definition of spyware will continue to change as our computer technology continues to progress.
